The Clock Tower: A Nostalgic Journey in Design

Reviving Old Memories through Innovative Architecture and Design

Devesh Bhatia, Pratyay Chakrabarti, Kamal Kishore, and Sawran Singh, the creative minds behind The Clock Tower, have crafted a unique space that evokes nostalgia and fosters connections. This award-winning restaurant and brewery in Gurgaon, India, is a testament to the power of design to transport and inspire.

The Clock Tower's design inspiration stems from old colonial British schools in the Himalayan regions of India. The designers aimed to create a space where friends could meet and relive cherished times. The result is a restaurant that exudes a classical colonial Victorian style, down to the smallest details, in a newly constructed space.

What sets The Clock Tower apart is its unique theme and the careful execution of its design. The building has been given a complete makeover, both in terms of its facade and interior design. Traditional Indian quartz stone and wood have been used to create a warm, traditional feel. The walls have been treated with a mix of white and grey cement, further enhancing the old-school aesthetic.

The realization of this design involved significant structural changes to an old, dilapidated building. Most of the structure was broken down to create new spaces, including a double-height grand space on the ground floor. A new stairwell was carved out, balconies were added for outdoor seating, and new terraces were created to offer a unified yet private experience.

Technical specifications of the design include the exterior cladding of Indian quartz stone and the use of pure cement moldings. The flooring varies across the building, with red and black oxide cement floor on the ground floor, wooden floor on the first floor, and cobble stone and kota stone flooring on the terrace. All walls are finished with neat cement punning, unpainted, and wood ceilings have been used on all floors.

The Clock Tower's design interaction is as thoughtful as its aesthetic. The entry to the building is from a long driveway that culminates at a small garden. As guests climb the steps to the main entrance, they are welcomed by a large double-height space with a performance stage and a large clock as a backdrop. The staircase leads to various levels, each offering a unique experience and a different collection of memorabilia.

Despite the challenges of using similar proportions on a much smaller scale, the designers have managed to provide the same grandeur found in the colonial buildings of the early to mid 90s. This design achievement was recognized with a Silver A' Hospitality, Recreation, Travel and Tourism Design Award in 2017, a testament to the team's outstanding expertise and innovation.
